😼 Dungeon Crawler Carl
The alien-owned galaxy demolishes Earth and turns the survivors into contestants on a televised dungeon crawl. Carl, an ex-Marine caught outside in boxer shorts, and Princess Donut, his ex-girlfriend's show cat, descend 18 floors of traps, talking loot boxes, and reality-TV politics. It is violent, absurd, and somehow genuinely moving.
If you have heard people yelling about a talking cat named Princess Donut, this is the series. Dungeon Crawler Carl started as a self-published LitRPG in 2020 and has grown into one of the biggest word-of-mouth hits in fantasy, with over 10 million copies sold and a TV deal to show for it.
The pitch: aliens legally repossess Earth, flatten every building, and turn the planet into an 18-floor dungeon that doubles as the galaxy's most popular reality show. Carl survives with nothing but boxer shorts and his ex-girlfriend's prize-winning cat, who gains human intelligence on floor one and immediately becomes the best character in the series. Each book is one floor deeper, one power spike weirder, and one step closer to Carl burning the whole system down.
Is Dungeon Crawler Carl on Kindle Unlimited?
Yes. All eight Dungeon Crawler Carl books are in Kindle Unlimited as of July 16, 2026. Here is the catch: now that Peacock has greenlit the TV series, this is exactly the kind of series that tends to leave KU as the show gets closer, the way other adapted KU hits have. No exit date is confirmed and it may stay put, but if you have been meaning to binge it, sooner beats later.

The Peacock TV series is officially happening
In June 2026, Peacock gave Dungeon Crawler Carl a straight-to-series order, with Seth MacFarlane's Fuzzy Door producing and Chris Yost writing. That follows book 8, A Parade of Horribles, landing in May 2026. Author Matt Dinniman has said the story wraps with book 9, which is big enough that it is being split into two volumes.
Adaptation hype is the classic moment a KU series goes purchase-only, and it is also when spoilers start flooding social feeds. Reading now gets you both ahead of the show and out of spoiler range.
The audiobook angle
The Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks, narrated by Jeff Hays of Soundbooth Theater, are widely considered some of the best audio productions in the genre. Dinniman has said the audiobooks outsell print and ebook. If you only ever try one audiobook series, make it this one.
